Transparency & Fair Pay

Our team values transparency at the core of our operations, so we’re pleased to announce we’re taking Moncton to a whole new level of employment equity. On June 14, 2023, we switched from gratuity to a flat-rate service charge model. The service charge will appear automatically on your receipt and just like every business, Black Rabbit will pay taxes on it. This enables us to ensure all employees, regardless of position, receive a local living wage thereby increasing the quality of life of our team.

By charging a nominal service charge, our employees not only have fair pay equity, but they have five weeks paid vacation each year, as well as wellness benefits that encourage body and mind synergy. A balance like this facilitates our personal and professional growth which results in elevated skills to bring even more innovative culinary excellence to you, our patrons.

A new poll by Angus Reid Institute indicates Canadians are becoming frustrated with tipping culture and the majority (59%) would prefer a “service included” model (replacing tips with higher wage structures for employees). Changing the existing wage structure of the hospitality industry will not only provide Canadians with what they prefer, but it also raises our standards to those of Europe’s. Our hope is that other businesses will follow our lead and change from a gratuity based model as well to benefit from both employee retention and an increased level of guest experience.

We realize our team’s decision is a big change for the existing hospitality industry, however we believe it’s the right one. We’re leading the way to a healthier wage system which will facilitate great progress. This will not only eliminate the pay disparity in an industry that is notorious for inequality, but bring forth a new business model where tip-flation ceases. Another benefit for all Monctonians.
